Former coach and current director of world football development at FIFA, Arsène Wenger, will present his idea to change the offside rule in football to the Board of the International Football Association (IFAB).
According to the English newspaper The Timesthe former French coach obtained positive results from tests carried out in Sweden, Italy and the Netherlands.
The change would alter the offside rule so that it benefits attackers more, meaning that the player is only offside if his entire body is in front of the penultimate defender, no longer just any part (that can score goals).
“With VAR detecting minimal infractions, benefiting the attacker in case of doubt has disappeared – and that has a reason. We want a rule that is fair. (…) If a marker is two centimeters offside because his shoulders are wider than the opponent, did you really have the advantage of the offside to score? I think we can all agree that that’s not the case. certain space between the players for a position to be considered irregular. This would also be an evolution.”, defended Wenger.
According to the English newspaper, official tests may take place in lower and less important divisions before reaching the main competitions.
