The US called on the FBI and IOC to investigate the doping case of Chinese swimmers
US Representatives John Molenaar and Raji Krishnamurthy have called on a number of authorities to conduct an official investigation into the doping cover-up of Chinese swimmers in 2021. The letter is available on the website of the US House Select Committee on Strategic Competition with China.
Politicians have written to the US Department of Justice, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the US Attorney General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). “It is critical to assess whether these alleged doping practices were state sponsored. “Additionally, with the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris less than 100 days away, understanding the full scope of the scandal is critical to ensuring fair competition.”
Earlier, the General Director of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) Travis Tygart accused the World Anti-Doping Association (WADA) and the Chinese agency CHINADA of concealing information. In response, WADA head Witold Banka criticized USADA and said that 90 percent of American athletes are not under the scope of the World Anti-Doping Code, and 31 percent of those who are have not been doping tested.
On April 20, it became known that in January 2021, banned trimetazidine was found in the samples of 23 Chinese swimmers. China said traces of the drug were found in the kitchen of the hotel where the athletes stayed during the competition. WADA considered that there was no evidence indicating doping, so the swimmers were allowed to compete in the Tokyo Olympics.
