1980 Games medalist Varganova, arrested for selling drugs, disappeared in India
Vice-champion of the 1980 Olympic Games in swimming, Svetlana Varganova, previously arrested for selling drugs in Goa, has disappeared in India. Regnum reports this.
According to the source, the former athlete does not contact the consulate and family. It is noted that while the investigation is ongoing, Varganova will not be able to leave the country. Presumably it should be located in India. It is also clarified that members of the drug cartel could help the Olympic medalist get out of prison.
Varganova’s arrest became known in April 2023. During the arrest, prohibited substances and money received from their sale were seized. She was later released on bail.
Varganova won silver at the 1980 Olympics in the 200-meter breaststroke. In the same discipline she became the world champion in 1982. In addition, she won bronze at the world championship in the 4 x 100 meter medley relay.
