The 44-year-old Italian coach, one of the most sought after in Europe at the moment, will lead Brighton for the last time on Sunday, against Manchester United, in the 38th and final round of the Premier League.
“We have jointly decided to terminate Roberto’s contract at a time that suits both parties, which allows us to plan next season as quickly as possible and gives Roberto time to think about his future,” said Tony Bloom, the club owner, in a statement.
“Leaving now gives me time to take a break before deciding on my future projects,” added De Zerbi, who said he was “very sad” to leave Brighton but also “very proud” of what he had achieved “during the last two historic seasons.”
De Zerbi took charge of the team in September 2022, succeeding Graham Potter, who left for Chelsea. He led Brighton to sixth place in the Premier League, their best finish after a season.
With this, they qualified for a European competition for the first time, reaching the round of 16 of the Europa League this year, eliminated by Roma.
The 2023/2024 season, which is about to end, was more complicated for Brighton, who are in tenth place before the last round.
