2024 Olympic torch relay canceled in New Caledonia due to unrest
In France, part of the 2024 Olympic torch relay was cancelled. BFMTV reports this.
The event will not take place in New Caledonia, a French overseas territory in the Pacific Ocean. After a meeting between the government and parliament, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced the cancellation of the relay on June 11 due to unrest.
Protests in New Caledonia erupted on May 13 after lawmakers in Paris voted in favor of a bill allowing French residents living in New Caledonia for 10 years to vote in provincial elections as part of constitutional reform. According to the local population, this will weaken the Kanak voices.
Earlier it became known that in France they tried to disrupt the Olympic torch relay more than 20 times. Those who tried to stop the relay included Olympic opponents, pro-Palestinian activists, climate activists and migrant rights activists.
The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will be held from July 26 to August 11. Russians and Belarusians, if a number of conditions are met, will be able to compete in the individual competitions of the tournament in a neutral status.
