In a video published this Friday, former defenders Miranda and Diego Godín celebrate May 17th as a symbol of their success at Atlético de Madrid. The date, in 2024, marks 11 years since winning the Copa del Rey and ten years since the victory over Barcelona that gave the club the LaLiga title.
It was on this day, in 2013, that Atlético broke a 14-year taboo without beating Real Madrid and, in the Santiago Bernabéu, won the Copa del Rey, a title they hadn’t won in 17 years. The scorer of the decisive goal, with a header, in the 8th minute of the first half of extra time in the final, was the Brazilian Miranda, who there, by sealing the 2-1 comeback, became the hero of an achievement that immortalized him in the history of the Mattresses.
Exactly one year later, on May 17, 2014, it was his defender’s turn, Diego Godín, to write his name in the history of Atlético de Madrid forever. Also with a header, the Uruguayan scored the goal in a 1-1 draw with Barcelona, at Camp Nou, in the last round of the Spanish Championship. With the result, Atleti ended an 18-year drought and became La Liga champions.
Now, exactly a decade after the second achievement and 11 years after the first, Atlético de Madrid’s eternal defense duo recalls their two most iconic achievements in a special video. Check out the video:
“On a day like today, 10 years ago we won the Spanish League at the Camp Nou and 11 years ago we won the Copa del Rey at the Bernabéu. May 17th will forever be a day of beautiful mattress memories.”, reiterated the former athletes on subtitle.
After building a successful career in European football, Miranda and Godín had a spell in Brazilian football: the first, revealed by Coritiba, returned to Brazil and ended his career with São Paulo, the club where he became an idol before going to the Old Continent. Diego Godín, on the other hand, only had one spell on Brazilian soil, in 2022, when he played for Atlético-MG.
