FIFA announced, this Friday, as part of its fight against discrimination in sport, that players will be able to make a gesture with their hands crossed to report racist attitudes to the referee.
World football’s governing body has declared that racism will become a specific crime in the sport’s code of discipline, with “severe” punishments that include the forfeiture of matches.
During the annual congress of FIFA’s 211 members in Bangkok (Thailand), “a global stance against racism” was taken, after several months of consultations with players who have suffered abuse from opponents or fans.
Real Madrid’s Brazilian star, Vinicius JĂșnior, is one of the most powerful voices to have denounced racism in football.
Often the target of insults in Spanish stadiums, the 23-year-old former Flamengo player recently broke down in tears at a press conference, recalling his fight against discrimination. A symbolic friendly between Spain and Brazil was organized at the end of March with this objective.
