FIFA announces first Women’s Club World Cup for 2026

The first Women’s Club World Cup will bring together 16 teams between January and February 2026 in an as yet unknown host country. FIFA’s announcement took place this Wednesday (15), during its 74th Congress, in Bangkok.

The new women’s competition will be held every four years, as will the men’s World Cup, expanded to 32 teams and whose first edition is scheduled to take place from June 15 to July 13, 2025, in the United States.

According to FIFA, which has been following a strategy of investing more in club football, the decision to create the tournament was made to “facilitate the continued development of women’s clubs around the world and to meet the requests of confederations”.

Furthermore, the entity proposed the organization of another women’s club competition from 2027, in years without a World Cup.

The overloaded men’s international calendar sparked new tensions this week when global players’ union FIFPro and the World Association of Professional Leagues called on FIFA to review the 2025 Club World Cup calendar under threat of legal action.

“We reject any suggestion or inference that FIFA ‘imposes’ the International Games Calendar (IMC) on the football community without adequate consultation, or to adapt it to its own ‘business strategy'”, the secretary then responded. General of FIFA, the Swede Mattias Grafstorm, formally appointed this Wednesday by Congress, after having served as interim since October 2023.
