Chicho Serna, a member of the Boca Juniors football department, admitted this Wednesday the Argentine team’s interest in James Rodríguez, who has been little used in São Paulo. After the arrival of coach Luis Zubeldía, the midfielder lost even more space in the squad.
“Who wouldn’t want to have James Rodríguez on their team? There are a lot of rumors here, especially with the arrival of the market,” said the manager in an interview with Caracol Radiofrom Colombia.
James Rodríguez arrived at São Paulo in July 2023, but failed to meet the fans’ expectations. In almost a year at the club, the Colombian participated in just 22 games, scored two goals and provided four assists.
In the current season, the situation is even more complicated and the midfielder has not been used due to Zubeldía’s technical choice. In 2024, he played only eight games, scored once and scored a goal.
Despite the bad moment, Chico Serna sees James as one of the great athletes in world football.
“I saw on the networks that James’ name appeared. He is a world-class player. He plays and shines. But from there to having him there is a long way to say ‘we will go for James’, but you cannot say that we are not interested .”
The director also reiterates the difficulty in signing a player who is in Brazilian football and states that the possibility of signing has not yet been evaluated.
“Again, news came out today, but to say that we on the committee or the board have looked at a possibility, no. We’re not contemplating that, but not because we’re not interested, but because I think James is a great football player and being in the It’s not easy to bring him to Brazil because the competition is very strong”, he concluded.
São Paulo takes to the field this Thursday, at 9pm (Brasília time), against Barcelona-EQU, at Morumbis, in the fifth round of the Libertadores group stage.
