Zhurova: it would be a shame if Khachanov was not allowed to attend the Olympics because of the St. George ribbon
First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Olympic speed skating champion Svetlana Zhurova assessed the possible removal of Russian tennis player Karen Khachanov from the Olympic Games (OI) because of the St. George ribbon. Her words are quoted by TASS.
“It’s a shame if because of this person they won’t be allowed to participate in the Olympics, in which case all that’s left to do is say the phrase ‘insanity has grown stronger’,” Zhurova said. In her opinion, the athlete, remembering the feat of his grandfathers, did not think about the fact that he could break anything.
Khachanov published a photo with the St. George ribbon on social networks on May 9. Some users complained about the tennis player to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
According to the conditions of admission of Russians to the 2024 Games in Paris, the St. George ribbon is a prohibited symbol. According to IOC criteria, it violates the principle of neutral status of Russian athletes.
