Fencer Pozdnyakova explained her refusal to participate in the 2024 Games due to her upbringing
Two-time Olympic champion from Russia Sofia Pozdnyakova explained her refusal to participate in the 2024 Games, which will be held in Paris. She is quoted by Match TV.
“I made my choice. It is based on my upbringing, my understanding of how it should be in sports. Sport is after all about honesty. And fencing is a noble sport,” Pozdnyakova said.
The fencer noted that other athletes may have a different opinion about participating in the Olympics. According to Pozdnyakova, each athlete must make his own choice.
In April, 26-year-old Pozdnyakova announced that she would not go to the Games in Paris. According to her, in the current conditions, participation in the Olympics is unacceptable for her.
Pozdnyakova is a two-time Olympic champion in saber fencing in the individual and team competitions at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. She also has two victories at the World and European Championships.
The International Olympic Committee has admitted Russians and Belarusians to the 2024 Olympics as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of the two countries, will miss the tournament. In addition, representatives of team sports from Russia and Belarus will not perform in Paris.
