The referees for the next Euro Cupwhich takes place between June 14th and July 14th, will better explain their decisions, but will only address the captains and will be able to give cards to other players who intend to interfere, UEFA indicated this Tuesday.
“We want referees with a strong personality, who make decisions, sometimes unpopular ones, and accept them, but we also want them to be more open”, explains Roberto Rosetti, head of the European entity’s arbitration committee, in a statement.
The directors of the next continental tournament “will share more details with the players and coaches to help them understand why they made some decisions” and to “create a climate of trust”, as they “receive a lot of information” from the VAR, continues the former Italian international referee.
“Being a referee in the modern game is very difficult. The official in the middle takes between 200 to 250 decisions per match in difficult and sometimes controversial situations”

But, as “explaining a decision when there are 22 players around you” is “impossible”, especially when there are “between 200 and 250 decisions” per game, “we ask all teams to ensure that the captain is the only player who speaks with the referee”, adds Roberto Rosetti.
If the captain is a goalkeeper, “it will obviously be necessary to designate a field player to fill that role if an incident occurs on the other side of the field”, says the head of European refereeing.
However, barring this exception, “any player who ignores the role of his captain and/or who approaches the referee showing a lack of respect or a protest will be reprimanded”, concludes Rosetti.
