Boxer Povetkin was appointed deputy governor of the Vologda region
Russian heavyweight boxer Alexander Povetkin became deputy governor of the Vologda region. The appointment was announced by the acting governor of the region, Georgy Filimonov, as quoted by TASS.
“As a leader of public opinion, a leader among sports youth, Alexander will be responsible for a large block of issues – sports, a healthy lifestyle and its popularization, for those issues that are considered to be the development of traditional patriotic values among our youth,” Filimonov said, adding that Povetkin will oversee public organizations and implement various projects.
In June 2021, it became known that Povetkin had completed his performances in professional boxing. The heavyweight explained this decision due to health problems.
Povetkin, 44, is a 2004 Olympic champion and former World Boxing Association (WBA) world champion. In the professional ring, he won 36 victories, suffered three defeats and ended one match in a draw.
