In the top scoring phase in Mexican football, goalkeeper Tiago Volpi is one of Toluca’s main names in the dispute for the Mexican title, which could put an end to a fast that has lasted 14 years at the club. On Wednesday night, the Brazilian’s team visits Chivas, in Guadalajara, in the opening of the Liguilla, the playoffs of the Mexican Championship.
With 12 goals since his return to Mexico (in 2022), five of them in the current edition, Tiago Volpi easily leads the ranking of goalkeepers with the most goals in the history of the Mexican Championship, which also includes names such as Colombian René Higuita and Mexican Jorge Campos.
After finishing the first phase in 3rd place, three points behind leader América, led by Brazilian coach André Jardine, Toluca, owner of the best attack in the competition, arrives with morale for the clash against Chivas.
“We are very optimistic. Chivas will be a very tough opponent, but our team showed during the first phase that it has the potential to finally put an end to this queue that bothers our fans so much”, says Tiago Volpi.

Toluca, the third biggest champion in Mexico, has ten titles in its history, but has not been champion since 2010. With Volpi, the team reached runner-up in the 2022 Apertura, and now they want to finally end the title drought.
“Historically, the Liga MX is a very balanced and competitive championship. It is rare for a club the size of Toluca to go so long without winning it, but that only motivates us more”, concludes the former São Paulo goalkeeper.
