Svechnikov knocked Shesterkin down and almost provoked a fight in an NHL match
Russian Carolina Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov attacked fellow New York Rangers goalkeeper Igor Shesterkin in a National Hockey League (NHL) playoff match. This was reported by a Lenta.ru correspondent.
In the first period, the goalkeeper made a pass from behind the goal. After he got rid of the puck, an attacker crashed into him, knocking Shesterkin to the ground. Svechkinov’s act almost provoked a mass fight: several Rangers players wanted to stand up for their teammate. The referees prevented the brawl, and Svechnikov was punished with a minor fine for tripping.
The game took place on the night of Wednesday, May 8, and ended with the Rangers winning in overtime with a score of 4:3. Among the winners, Russian Artemy Panarin scored three assists. Svechnikov scored one assist.
The Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the series. The third meeting will take place on May 10, Carolina will play at home.
