“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I am publishing this post to announce the death of my beloved husband and life partner Ian Gelder,” Gelder’s husband, Ben Daniels, wrote on social media. “Ian was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December, and yesterday he died at 1:07 p.m. I stopped work to become his caregiver, but neither of us had any idea it would all happen so quickly,” he wrote on Instagram.
“He was a great, great actor.” Ian Gelder is dead
“He was the kindest, most generous, fiery and loving man. He was a wonderful, wonderful actor and everyone who worked with him was touched by his heart and light. I truly don’t know what I would do without him by my side,” wrote Daniels, who was associated with the actor for 30 years. He also wrote that Gelder “handled his terrible illness with great courage, without self-pity.”
“This photo was taken at Christmas, after I took him out of the hospital, and even though he had the worst three weeks there, you can still see his joy and love. Rest peacefully, my sweet Chianni,” she said goodbye to her husband.
Gelder made his debut as a theater actor in 1969 at the Theater Royal in Bristol, and three years later he landed his first television role. In 1973, he played one of the main roles in the miniseries “The Donati Conspiracy”. Since the second half of the 1970s, he has been associated with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In “Game of Thrones” he played Kevan Lannister, the younger brother of Lord Tywin Lannister and his right-hand man. He served as Lord Regent of the Realm and Protector of the Realm.
