Flamengo loses to Palestino, suffers a second bitter defeat in the Libertadores and falls to third place

Flamengo suffered its second consecutive defeat playing away from home in the Libertadores in 2024. On Tuesday night, Rubro-Negro from Rio lost to Palestino, in Chile, 1-0. Cornejo, in the second half, scored the only goal of the game.

The victory leaves Palestino in second place in Group E, with six points. Flamengo, which is stuck at four points, awaits the result of the duel between Millonarios-COL and Bolívar-BOL this Wednesday, in Colombia, to define its position. If Millonarios wins by two or more goals, the Rio team will fall to the bottom.

The fifth round of the Group will begin next Tuesday with the clash between Millonarios-COL and Palestino-CHI, at El Campín, in Bogotá. Flamengo will play the following day, at Maracanã, against leader Bolívar-BOL.

The game

The first half in Coquimbo was full of action from both teams but with rare moments of danger. The game was more concentrated between the two midfielders and the two goalkeepers didn’t have much to do.

More pressure to achieve a positive result, Palestino sought to score high and make it difficult for the red-and-black ball to escape, while Tite’s team did not advance its lines much and let the opponent play with more freedom.

In the first thirty minutes, it was the Chileans who appeared most in the game and Flamengo were unable to impose themselves despite their technical superiority and disposition on the field. However, in the final third of the first half, Rubro-Negro organized themselves better and started to press in search of the goal and closed the stage with eight shots compared to just four from the Palestinian.

Flamengo came back better in the second half and almost opened the scoring in the 11th minute. In the best opportunity of the game so far, Pedro received the ball in the area, leaving it for De la Cruz to finish for the Rigamonti defense. On the rebound, Bruno Henrique makes a mistake and sends it across the baseline.

Rubro-Negro was better on the field but it was Palestino who opened the scoring with a great goal. In the 18th minute, a corner taken from the left, Léo Pereira headed the ball and Cornejo hit it first time, without letting the ball touch the ground and hit it in the corner, with no chance for Rossi.

The panorama of the game after the goal was the same: Palestino closed down to guarantee the result, gave up possession of the ball and Flamengo went all out in search of a draw. Rubro-Negro created some opportunities to score, but the Chileans remained well organized and concentrated on the field.

Tite made several changes to the team, adding Gabigol, Luiz Araújo, Varela and Ayrton Lucas, but to no avail.
