He Athletic Clubwith two goals from Inaki Williamsboth ahead of his brother Nico, won at the Coliseum against Getafein a duel in which they ended up with nine players due to the expulsions of Yeray Álvarez and Aitor Paredes and in which he also stood out Unai Simonwho saved a penalty from Mason Greenwood.

The Bilbao team, after last day’s setback at the Metropolitano against Atlético de Madrid, arrived in Getafe ready to make amends and, above all, to be excited about the options they still have of reaching fourth place.

Without Gorka Guruzeta, his top scorer, who was rested by Ernesto Valverde, the Bilbao coach bet his entire attack on the Williams brothers and the bet paid off. At 27 minutes, Nico, on the left side of the attack, gave the ball to Iñaki, who let the ball run and from the front launched a cross shot to the long post of David Soria unattainable for the Madrid goalkeeper.

The goal gave wings to the Basque team, which until that moment was the one that tried to propose the most elaborate football at the expense of a Getafe that, with more possession, but with flashes, only worried in isolated actions of its most decisive players.

One of them, the British Mason Greenwoodcame close to spoiling Athletic’s first goal celebration, since just three minutes after the celebration an individual play was invented that ended with a low shot to the left post that Unai Simón cleared with a good stretch.

The same protagonist, Greenwood, met the Athletic goalkeeper again as soon as the second half began, since a shot that was going for goal was cleared by Unai Simón flying to clear the ball.

Athletic did not want any more scares and, five minutes into the second half, the connection between the Williams brothers surprised Getafe again. Nico received a ball in the midfield, left Diego Rico, headed towards the rival goal and put a measured cross to the far post that Iñaki finished off the goal without opposition.

The Madrid team saw a ray of hope for a comeback shortly after, when Yeray cut a ball with his hand in the center of the field and was sent off, forcing Valverde to recompose his tactical scheme.

Getafe took advantage of the situation to take control of the ball, advance its lines and subdue Athletic, who began to suffer from the approaches of their rival, especially after Juanmi Latasa came out onto the pitch.

With eleven minutes remaining in regulation time, the game became even more complicated for Athletic after the expulsion, for a double yellow, by Aitor Paredeswhich inevitably meant that the red and white team backed down.

The Madrid team went all out on the attack and was able to close the gap with a penalty, decreed by the referee when consulting the VAR, after a ball that touched Raúl García’s arm. The referee sent off Ernesto Valverde for protesting the penalty called.

Greenwood, from eleven meters, shot low to his left and Unai Simón guessed the trajectory to clear the ball.

The ruling was a blow to Getafe, who still tried to compose themselves to continue harassing a rival who knew how to suffer until the final whistle, which came after nine minutes of added time. Despite everything, Athletic achieved three golden points, which allows them keep dreaming of fourth place which gives access to the Champions League.
