After 12 years, Marco Reus will leave Borussia Dortmund. This Friday, the German club announced that it had reached a mutual agreement not to renew the player’s contract. The contract ends at the end of the European season.
Marco Reus arrived at Dortmund’s youth teams in 1995 and stayed until 2005. He returned to the club in 2012 as a professional, after being voted the best player in Germany, playing for Monchengladbach.
“I am extremely grateful and proud for this special moment at my club, Borussia Dortmund. I have spent more than half my life at this club and I have enjoyed every day, although there have been difficult moments. I already know that it will be difficult to say goodbye at the end of the season. Still, I’m pleased that there is now clarity and we can fully focus on the important final games that are still pending. We have a big goal in mind and we all want to achieve it together. I would like to expressly thank you for your incredible support over the years”, said Marco Reus.

For Dortmund, Reus took to the field in 424 opportunities and, to date, has scored 168 goals and distributed 128 assists. Furthermore, he won the German Cup twice and was a key player in taking the German club to the 2013 Champions League final.
Hans-Joachim Watzke, CEO of Dortmund, praised the history built by the player at the club. He also hopes that Reus will return to the German team in the future, but in a different role.
“Marco Reus is one of this club’s greatest players. He was born in Dortmund, played almost ten years in the youth teams, was in the professional team for twelve years and was captain of our team for a long time. His connection to Borussia Dortmund is extraordinary “We wish Marco all the best for his future. We sincerely hope he returns to Borussia after his professional career, because there are many exciting tasks awaiting him here at Dortmund,” he said.
The Borussia Dortmund captain aims to end his time at the club in historic fashion. The German team is in the semi-finals of the Champions League and is looking for the second title in the competition in its history
