Bach: Russians will not be in the parade at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games due to violation of the charter
The head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, explained the ban on the participation of Russians in the parade of athletes at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games. His words are reported by RAC1.
“This is a consequence of the violation of the Olympic Charter by the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), which annexed Crimea through a referendum, so we had to suspend its membership,” Bach said. He noted that Russians can only compete individually outside of delegations, so they will not be at the delegation parade. At the same time, neutral athletes will be able to attend the ceremony itself.
The Olympic Games in Paris will be held from July 26 to August 11. Russians and Belarusians, if a number of conditions are met, will be able to compete in the individual competitions of the tournament in a neutral status.
On October 12, 2023, the IOC suspended the ROC until further notice due to the inclusion of representatives of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions in the organization. The suspension stipulates that the ROC will not function as a national Olympic committee or receive funding from the Olympic movement.
