France records record number of dengue fever cases ahead of 2024 Olympics
A record number of imported cases of the deadly dengue fever have been identified in France ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games. This was reported by Inside the Games with reference to the head of the General Directorate of Health in France, Gregory Emery.
According to the source, since the beginning of 2024, 1,679 cases of the disease have been recorded in the European part of the country. At the same time, 131 cases were identified in 2023. It is noted that most of the sick came from the overseas departments of France – Guadeloupe and Martinique.
Dengue fever is a viral disease that is common in the countries of Southeast Asia and the Pacific region, Central and South America, as well as in African countries. Fever is not spread from person to person.
On April 10, it became known that part of the triathlon competitions at the Paris Olympics was in jeopardy. The head of the organizing committee of the Games, Tony Estangue, admitted that the swimming part could be canceled due to the quality of water in the Seine River. He explained that when there is heavy rain, the levels of E. coli in the water increase.
The Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
