Vollering, new leader of the Vuelta after being the strongest in Alto del Fuerte Rapitán

The Dutch Demi Volleringfrom the SW Worx-Protime team, is the new leader of the Cycling Tour of Spain by winning alone the fifth stage, of 113.9 kilometers between Huesca and Alto del Fuerte Rapitán, in Jaca, the first with an uphill finish of the present edition.
Vollering27 years old and second in last year’s Vuelta, achieved the thirtieth victory of her career and the first of 2024 and did so with a margin of 28 seconds over her compatriot Yara Kastelijn (Fenix-Deceunink) and the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek), who accompanied her on the podium.
With three stages left to go, Vollering he wears the red leader’s jersey with 31 seconds of advantage over Longo Borghini and 53 over the also Dutch Riejanne Markus (Visma-Lease a Bike).
This Thursday’s stage had an uncomfortable start due to the wind, which prevented any escape attempt from succeeding for more than 50 kilometers.
Before the first difficulties of the day, the most important attempt was the one carried out by Lourdes Oyarbide (Laboral Kutxa-Fundación Euskadi), which stood alone for about 18 kilometers until being neutralized in the middle of the first pass.
