Tampa Bay coach John Cooper apologizes for suggesting NHL goalkeepers should wear skirts

Tampa Bay Lightning head coach John Cooper has apologized for suggesting that National Hockey League (NHL) goalkeepers should wear skirts. His words are quoted on the team’s website.

“We suffered a rather disappointing defeat in the series. I made an inappropriate analogy about goalies and skirts. You know, it’s one of those times where you want to reach out and take it back, I would,” Cooper said. The coach apologized to everyone he offended, noting that these words brought him more pain than losing the series.

In Game 5 of the Stanley Cup round of 16, the Florida Panthers defeated Tampa Bay 6-1 to win the series 4-1. During the match, the referees canceled two Tampa goals due to interference with goalkeeper Sergei Bobrovsky. Cooper was critical of this point, suggesting that goalkeepers should wear skirts.

Earlier, in the second match of the series between Tampa and Florida, Bobrovsky made a spectacular save. After a pass to the area, the Russian found himself facing his own goal, but extended his left arm and jumped to deflect a shot from Tampa player Matt Dumba.
