This Saturday, Atlético de Madrid hosted Athletic Bilbao and won 3-1, in the Spanish Championship. In the final part of the first stage, player Nico Williams, from the visiting team, heard racist insults from local fans. After the game, the 21-year-old striker detailed what happened.
“I heard monkey sounds when I took the corner. The truth is that there were few. There are stupid people everywhere. I hope this changes little by little. We are fighting internally and externally against this. With a little anger, it’s not normal for people to still insult you because of the color of your skin, but you have to keep working,” Nico Williams told the channel DAZN.
After receiving the athlete’s report, judge Juan Martinez Munuera stopped the confrontation and alerted the captains of both teams. Five minutes after the match resumed, Nico himself scored Bilbao’s equalizer and, in celebration, showed the color of his skin to the fans.
“I send him a lot of strength. People like that have no place. Neither Atlético nor its fans are in favor of this,” said Koke, captain of Atlético de Madrid. “I didn’t hear the insults, but if something happened, I send a lot of strength to Nico. This doesn’t need to happen on the football field and in the society we live in today,” he added.
