Russia responded to the ban on displaying the Z symbol at the Paris Olympics

Deputy Svishchev stated that he did not understand the ban on the Z symbol at the Paris Olympics

The ban on displaying the symbol of the Russian special military operation (SVO) in the form of the letter Z at the Summer Olympics in Paris is connected with political motives, says Dmitry Svishchev, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports. In a conversation with Lenta.ru, he said that he did not understand such a reaction from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“I am surprised by the statements of Mr. [президента МОК Томаса] Bach. He so insistently prohibits the letter Z, although in reality what is scary about it for the Olympic Committee? This is, of course, amazing, I can’t even imagine what scares them so much. At the same time, he allowed participants in another conflict – Israel and Palestine – without any restrictions, here, of course, it is surprising that this is happening. They explain that Russia is a completely different matter. What’s the matter? Russia is a well-known sports power, which is a powerful sports driver for the development of international sports,” the deputy said.

I don’t see any reasons here other than political ones.

Russian athletes at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will face disciplinary measures up to and including disqualification for displaying symbols with the letter Z. Thomas Bach warned about this.

He noted that political actions are prohibited during competitions or awards ceremonies. “If a Russian athlete displays a flag or a Z symbol, a disciplinary procedure will be initiated, which could lead to disqualification,” the IOC head said.
