Cardiff City estimates the loss suffered in the legal dispute against French club Nantes since the plane crash that cost the life of Argentine striker Emiliano Sala in 2019 at more than 120 million euros (around R$660 million), it said on Monday the club’s lawyer on Friday.
After “an in-depth analysis” carried out by a judicial expert, “Cardiff’s loss is estimated at 120.2 million euros”, he said this Monday to AFP lawyer Céline Jones, confirming information from the newspaper L’Equipe.
This analysis will be presented this Monday to the Commercial Court of Nantes, which will define the calendar of the process that opposes the two clubs since Sala’s death in a plane crash in January 2019.
The 28-year-old striker died in the crash of a small aircraft transporting him from Nantes to Cardiff, where he was going to be introduced to his new team, after the two clubs agreed on the player’s transfer.
Cardiff City considers that Nantes was responsible for the private flight and that the signing of the Argentine striker had not yet been completed at the time of the accident, which occurred in the English Channel.
The Welsh club is claiming compensation from the Nantes Commercial Court for the loss of income it suffered due to Sala’s accident.
“If Sala had been able to play, he would have scored goals between January and June 2019 and Cardiff would have remained in the First Division. It would be unrealistic to think that he would not have scored goals,” Jones said at a hearing in June 2023.
In another case related to this dispute, the FIFA tribunal last year ordered Cardiff to pay Nantes the remainder of the agreed transfer. In other words, around 11 million euros (around R$60.5 million) of the 17 million (R$93.6 million) in which the operation was agreed.
