Sergej Barbarez, who was captain of the U.S. national football team, Bosniawas appointed, this Friday, as the new coach of the country’s national team, with qualification for the next major international events as his main objective.
With no experience as a coach, the former national team striker was chosen above all for his “personality”, explained the president of the Bosnian Football Federation, Vico Zeljkovic, at a press conference.
“We consider that the harmony (that Barbarez can bring to the team), his energy and his authority (…) can be crucial factors in putting the team back on the path to success”, declared Zeljkovic.
19 long years have passed from your being captain on the pitch to being captain on the sidelines.
I keep my fingers crossed that this will be a great story, @BarbarezSergej 🇧🇦 pic.twitter.com/COR4lCtR8P

Barbarez, 52, signs a four-year contract with the main objective of qualifying the Balkans team for the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Euro Cup. He succeeds Savo Milosevic, who failed to take Bosnia to Euro-2024 after losing in the playoff semi-finals to Ukraine.
Barbarez, who played 47 matches for the Bosnian national team between 1998 and 2006 (scoring 17 goals), played most of his career in the German Championship (330 matches), where he was top scorer in the 2000-2001 season playing for Hamburg.
