Most mortals are not like Jairus. We can celebrate the birthday in a tent on the outskirts of a town, but We don’t even dream of filling it with 3,000 people. Well for him it’s the third time.
It all started two years ago, planning his birthday for 40 friends with his friend Fran. But Jairo began to dream big: “What if we bring 3 DJs, a brass band…?” Too much budget for Fran, she got off the wagon. And Jairo felt free to extend his invitation to the entire Instagram. And he caught. Wow, he caught on: they arrived at the magical little Turégano, a town in Segovia that has less than 1,000 inhabitants, 3,000 young people. With their cars. “There was nowhere to park them. People couldn’t even fit into the two open bars, so half had to turn around“.
The following year Jairo repeated the invitation. But this time he extended the offer. He looked for a large venue, rented a stage truck, a food truck, the brass band again, 5 DJs for ten hours of partying, 550 cars arrived… and The Civil Guard reported 100 positive alcohol tests in a control in the town square.
This third year, his birthday is already a festival. Finalize the preparations for this Saturday night’s party with him and wait for the arrival of the delivery truck loaded with soft drinks. The friend who makes his t-shirts and scarves merchandising (He gives away the scarves for the first 250, but he charges eight euros for the t-shirts). The acquaintance who sets up the bar inside the tent. His friend Rubén, with the mixer and two plates: “Without this there is no party.” Jairo, who is a DJ, knows this well. And the posters, which Jairo will be in charge of hanging throughout the town to indicate where to get to the party.
It also shows the spaces you have reserved. The pool bar will do its job. The changing rooms will be the artists’ rest and preparation area. Although they still look dirty since the season closed in September, Jairo will take the broom.
This year Jairo has had to present a security plan, talk to Civil Protection and obtain the countless permits. It’s already a professional festival… that charge entrance. Between 11 and 14 euros, depending on how far in advance you buy. He says that he will invest whatever is left over in next year’s ‘Ocañas’s Party’. “They are cheap prices, to achieve what I want: to bring the youth festival to small towns like this one, which are in need of this type of leisure,” she defends.
The majority of the people like the initiative. They are not the parties they are used to receiving, but they understand the tourism opportunity that shows.
We spoke with Kuba, owner of the Bar Café Centro, in the Plaza de Ocaña. That was the place that Jairo chose for the first party and he does not forget the massive arrival of people: “I can’t tell you how many because I have limited capacity and I could have gotten into trouble.” He also remembers the great drinks they had and hopes the same for this year: “They will come before the party, during, and surely also after. “To have breakfast here and get over the hangover.”
Welcome visits to the town. Although Some countryman reproaches Jairo for not taking care of cleaning the previous two years., and it was the public workers of the City Council who had to take care of removing the dirt from their private party. “This year I have learned and I have hired cleaning,” answers Jairo.
The party is this Saturday night. On Sunday, Turégano will only talk about the hangover.
