This Tuesday, Atlético de Madrid lost to Borussia Dortmund 4-2 (5-4 on aggregate), away from home, in the second leg of the quarter-finals of the Champions League and was eliminated from the competition. Coach Diego Simeone analyzed the Spanish team’s defeat and explained the reasons for the fall.
“The team tried until the end to win a game that was at all times the opposite of what we wanted. At the Metropolitano, we had opportunities to deal better with the result, here the same thing happened. They reacted very well to 2-2 and advanced fairly because they were more forceful”, said the Argentine coach after the match.
We fought until the conclusion, but we fell just short of the semi-finals. Thank you, fans, for your support tonight both in Dortmund and from all the red and white homes. We will continue working to come back stronger. pic.twitter.com/3pfxGaotU8

Atlético de Madrid went to Germany with the lead on the scoreboard (2-1), but in the first half they saw Borussia Dortmund take a 2-0 lead and turn the game around on aggregate. The Colchoneros managed to react and tied the match in the second half. However, soon after, they conceded two goals in a row and did not have the strength to recover in the duel.
Diego Simeone explained that the injury was the main reason for the elimination. The commander also answered whether it was possible to train on this issue.
“It’s difficult. They are characteristics of more and less success. That’s why there are statistics, one person gets 80%, another 40%… It’s part of football. Improving? Yes, it’s possible, but it’s part of each person’s natural essence, both in defense and attack. Statistics make the difference,” he said.
Now, Atlético de Madrid returns to focus on the Spanish Championship. The Colchoneros will face Alavés next Sunday, at 1:30 pm (Brasília time), at the Mendizorrotza Stadium, in the 32nd round of LaLiga.
