This Sunday, Bayer Leverkusen beat Werder Bremen 5-0 at the BayArena and became champions of the German Championship for the first time in their history. After the match, the fans present at the stadium could not contain their emotions and invaded the pitch to celebrate with the players.
The fans had already threatened to start the party after the fourth goal, scored by Wirtz, in the 37th minute of the second half. A small part of the fans invaded the field, but the players and coach Xabi Alonso, who wanted to wait for the final whistle, asked for calm, and the fans returned to the stands.
The title came five rounds in advance, with an undefeated campaign until then. In the competition, there were 29 matches, with 25 wins and four draws.
Despite having won the German Championship only this season, Bayer Leverkusen came close to the title on five occasions: 1998/99, 1999/2000, 2001/02 and 2010/11, when they were runners-up. The team has won the German Cup in 1992/93.
During the German team’s great campaign, commander Xabi Alonso was besieged by major world football clubs, such as Liverpool and Bayern Munich, who will change coaches next season. Despite being happy to have his work recognized, the Spanish coach has already announced that he will remain at Leverkusen.
Bayer Leverkusen are not only undefeated in the Bundesliga, but in the season as a whole. The team is in the final of the German Cup, in which they will face Kaiserslautern, on May 25th. Furthermore, the Germans are in the quarter-finals of the Europa League and won the first game, against West Ham, 2-0.
