With the defeat, Arsenal wasted the opportunity to take the lead in the competition. The team occupies second place, with 71 points – two less than the leader Manchester City. Furthermore, Mikel Arteta’s side lost an 11-game unbeaten run in the tournament.
Before entering the field, Aston Villa had already taken fourth place in the table due to Tottenham’s 3-0 defeat to Newcastle. With the victory, the team reached 63 points – three more than the London team.
The home team returns to the field this Wednesday, for the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, against Bayern. The teams drew 2-2 in the first duel. The visitors have a commitment valid for the quarter-finals of the Conference League, against Lille, this Thursday. The team won the first leg 2-1.
The game was balanced in the first half, with ball possession divided between the teams. Arsenal had the best opportunities, but stopped with the good performance of goalkeeper Emiliano MartÃnez.
Things started to go wrong for Arsenal towards the end of the second half. In the 39th minute, Leon Bailey took advantage of a low cross and played with the goal open to open the scoring for Aston Villa.
Soon after, in the 42nd minute, the visitors extended the score. Watkins, calmly, covered the Raya goalkeeper and killed the game once and for all.
