Bayer Leverkusen thrashes Werder Bremen and wins unprecedented German Championship title

Bayer Leverkusen beat Werder Bremen 5-0 this Sunday and confirmed their unprecedented German Championship title with five rounds to spare, interrupting Bayern Munich’s streak of 11 consecutive trophies in the competition. The goals of the match were scored by Boniface, Xhaka and Wirtz (3).

With the result, the champion team reached 79 points and can no longer be reached by second place, Bayern, which has 63. The Bremen team, in turn, continues with 31 points and is in 12th position.

Leverkusen returns to the field on Thursday, this time looking to win the Europa League. The team faces West Ham, away from home, in the second leg of the quarter-finals. In the first leg, the German team won 2-0.

The club led by Xabi Alonso is also looking to finish the German Championship undefeated. Bayer Leverkusen has 25 wins and four draws in 29 games in the points competition.

The game

It didn’t take long for Bayer Leverkusen’s celebrations to begin, as the team opened the scoring in the 24th minute of the first half. Hoffmann received the ball in the area and was going to shoot the free kick towards the goal, however, Malatini, in an attempt to block it, ended up committing the penalty. On the charge, Boniface converted.

The second goal came 14 minutes into the second half. Boniface made a play on the left and rolled the ball to Xhaka, who hit it first time, from outside the area, to find the back of the net and increase Bayer Leverkusen’s lead on the scoreboard.

Wirtz, who had come off the bench a few minutes earlier, doubled the lead in the 22nd minute. He received a pass from Andrich in the middle, squared the ball and put his foot in from outside the box to score the third.

The game turned into a rout in the 37th minute, when, on a counterattack, Palacios hit a beautiful ball to Wirtz, who hit the opposing goalkeeper and didn’t forgive him. Following the goal, a small part of the crowd invaded the field, but the situation was quickly contained.

In the 44th minute, there was still time for Wirtz to score his third goal and the home team’s fifth. The number 10 received a pass, invaded the area and hit a cross into the back of the net.

With the final whistle blowing, and Bayer Leverkusen confirming their first German Championship title in their history, the fans invaded the field once and for all to celebrate with the players.

Darmstadt x Freiburg

In the day’s other German Championship game, Darmstadt and Freiburg faced each other at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor. With a goal from Ritsu Doan, the visitors won 1-0.
