Hungary called the admission of Russians to the Olympics in a neutral status humiliating
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations of Hungary, Peter Szijjártó, spoke about the conditions for admission of Russian athletes to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. His words are available on his Facebook page (social network banned in Russia; owned by Meta Corporation, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and is banned).
Szijjártó called the participation of Russians in the Games in a neutral status humiliating. He considered that punishing athletes for geopolitical reasons and forcing them to make political statements was unacceptable. “If we cross this line, then who knows which centers of power will be able to speak, who can participate in competitions,” the politician added.
Earlier, the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, said that Russian and Belarusian athletes would not be welcome at the Summer Games. The head of the Russian Olympic Committee, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, criticized the IOC for its lack of response to these statements.
Russians and Belarusians were allowed to participate in the Games in Paris as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
