Spain calls on the IOC to ban Israel from the Olympics
Spain’s left-wing coalition bloc Sumar has proposed banning Israel from the Olympic Games. The appeal was published on social networks X.
Sumar said it has registered a parliamentary resolution calling on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to exclude Israel from participating in the next Olympic and Paralympic Games. “Genocide is being committed, and while this continues, it is unacceptable for Israel to participate in this peaceful event,” the message said.
Earlier, another European country, France, made a similar proposal. French Member of Parliament Edouard Benard wrote a letter to the country’s Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Casteret and drew her attention to the request of more than 300 Palestinian sports clubs and civil society organizations in support of Israel’s exclusion from the Olympic movement.
On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian Hamas movement attacked Israel. The country called the attack a war and on October 10 began launching large-scale strikes against Hamas militant targets in the Gaza Strip in response.
