World Cup champion comments on differences between European football and MLS

Champion of the 2018 World Cup with France, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris left English football at the end of last year to join Los Angeles FC, in the United States. In an interview with FIFA, the archer commented on the main differences between North American and European football.

“In MLS, they implemented the salary cap, clubs are limited in their acquisitions. Team management is different. It’s a much more homogeneous championship, although each team has its standout players. The difficulty also lies in away games , because they are long trips. Not to mention that from one state to another climate change is radical. I could see this in Salt Lake City, in Minnesota and in Colorado, where, due to the altitude, we felt a big difference with the ball”, he said .

Despite having won the World Cup in 2018, Lloris carries severe anguish due to the defeat, on penalties, in the 2022 World Cup final, to Argentina. Even so, the goalkeeper tries to see the positive side of the story.

“Considering the scenario, the whirlwind of emotions we went through, it took a little time to digest. But then I remember that I am the 2018 world champion and that having reached two World Cup finals in the space of four and a half years is simply exceptional. Sometimes, those who see it from the outside can end up minimizing things, but the truth is that what we did was truly incredible. Like every lost final, there are always regrets, it’s always painful, but we can’t go back. That’s part of of our history”, he said.

Lloris also responded about the possibility of playing in the 2026 World Cup, in which the United States will be one of the hosts.

“Honestly, I don’t know where I’ll be. I don’t know if I’ll still be in the United States. There are many factors, but the ideal would be to be able to follow the World Cup from within. That will depend on how my contract with LAFC will turn out. If If it doesn’t happen, I’ll still follow the tournament, because I love the World Cup and I’m connected to it due to my career. I’ll be able to follow it from a different perspective than I had as a player”, he commented.

Lloris will be 39 years old in the next edition of the World Cup. The captain of the French national team in 2018 and 2022 was not called up by coach Didier Deschamps in the last FIFA Data.
