Everton suffers new sanction and loses 2 more points in the Premier League

Everton was again sanctioned, with the removal of two additional points in the Premier League standings, for violating the financial rules of the English Championship, the Liverpool club announced this Monday (8).

“During a three-day hearing last month, the independent commission heard evidence and arguments from the club regarding a range of possible mitigating factors for its admitted breach of £16.6m [cerca de R$ 106 milhões pela cotação atual]including the impact of his two successive PSR charges [regras de lucro e sustentabilidade]. Having done so, the committee determined that the appropriate sanction would be a two-point deduction, effective immediately.”

The Toffees had already received a 10-point penalty for violating the Premier League’s profitability and viability rules in the run-up to the 2022-2023 season. The sanction was reduced in February to the removal of six points following an appeal lodged by the club.

The new sanction corresponds to the period 2022-2023, although the entity has already announced its intention to appeal.

“Although the club’s position was that no further sanction was appropriate, the club is pleased to see that the committee gave credence to the majority of the issues raised, including the concept of double punishment, the significant extenuating circumstances faced by the club due to war in Ukraine and the club’s high level of cooperation and early admission of violation”, the club reacted in a statement.

“Everton remains committed to working collaboratively with the league on all matters relating to financial rules, but is extremely concerned about the inconsistency of the different committees with regards to the point deductions applied,” the statement added.

With this decision, the Liverpool club approaches the relegation zone, as it is in 16th place with 27 points, just two above the relegation zone that is currently opened by Luton Town.

On Saturday, the ‘Toffes’ beat Burnley at home 1-0.

Everton Football Club is one of the most traditional clubs in British football. Champion of England nine times (the last in 1987), he has played in the first division since 1954 without interruption.

The team’s next game will be against Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge, next Monday.

Then, on April 21st, they will face Nottingham Forest at home, who are also fighting not to fall and, like Everton, were punished for violating the financial rules of the English Championship, with the loss of four points.
