Disney Plus for adults. A selection of the most interesting items that should not be watched with children

On her wedding day, the bride must experience a murderous game with her new family. A mad scientist integrates his body with a fly. Aliens, brutal murders and an “erotic nightmare”. Oh yes, part of the Disney Plus offer is definitely not for children. I chose what is worth turning on when the little ones finally go to bed.

I wonder how many people decided that they would not use Plus, because it is a platform with cartoons and films for children. Meanwhile, nothing could be further from the truth, because the offer includes, among others: a rich collection of horror films, thrillers full of picturesque fight scenes, thoroughbred crime stories and comedies full of jokes inappropriate for little ears (the first one “Deadpool” is a good example). You can also find Hollywood classics and Oscar favorites. It’s worth exploring the platform’s resources, I keep discovering something there that surprises me.

What can you watch on Disney Plus? Horror movies

First choice: a film with the charming title “The Buried Game”. Briefly speaking, the plot is that on the wedding day, the bride must survive a murderous game of hide and seek with the relatives of her aristocratic groom. It’s a perverse mix of black comedy and charmingly bloody horror with a great cast: Samara Weaving, praised for her role (the daughter of Hugo Waving, also known as Agent Smith from “The Matrix” and Elrond from “The Lord of the Rings”), Adam Brody , Mark O’Brien, Henry Czerny, Andie MacDowell and Melanie Scrofano. The film received an 89% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. positive opinions, and 78% from viewers. Great fun, dripping with red maple syrup.

Second proposition: In the horror category, we can find on Disney Plus, for example, the classic “The Fly” by David Cronenberg. My personal mother still recalls with disgust the unfortunate day when she watched this work in the cinema – it made a truly stunning impression on her. Not without reason, of course, because the film won an Oscar for makeup. The creators had a lot of fun here: after a failed experiment, an eccentric scientist begins to turn into a mutant insect of disproportionate size, so it’s terrible. The main roles were played by Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, and it is worth knowing that the production’s promotional slogan “Be afraid. Be very afraid” has entered the pop culture canon.

Haven’t you seen the third proposal? We have to make up for it. We’re talking about the gleefully strange “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” from 1975, which is described in its description on Disney Plus as a “cult erotic nightmare.” What a mix it is: horror, musical and parody in one. The whole fun begins with a couple of young fiancées’ car breaking down in the middle of some remote area. This way, they end up in a mad scientist’s castle and terrifying or grotesquely funny things start to happen. The cast included Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O’Biren, Patricia Quinn and Little Nell, as well as Meatloaf.

The production is absolutely rightly considered one of the best musicals of all time and is credited with, among others, popularizing such punk rock trends as fishnet stockings and hair dyed in the strangest colors. In fact, in 2005 it was included in the National Film Registry run by the American Library of Congress as a work of “cultural, historical or aesthetic significance”. Interestingly, in 2024 “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” can still be seen in individual cinemas, which, after 48 years, gives it the title of the longest-running film in history.

Proposal four, this is getting weird: This is not the end of the review of items from the “blood, screams, fear and tears” category. The platform also includes, among others: “Killer Body”, where Megan Fox plays a demon-possessed cheerleader who devours one unfortunate person after another. A concerned best friend (Amanda Seyfired) tries to understand what’s going on, when she discovers the truth, no one wants to believe her because it sounds absurd – a deliciously casual entry in the category of stupid scary movies.

Maybe a series? Fifth proposition: Vampires in a satirical version can be admired on Disney Plus in the sensational series “What We Do in the Shadows”, which tells the story of the everyday life of a group of bloodsuckers who have been living in Staten Island, New York, for several centuries. They are also accompanied by an energy vampire, potentially the most boring man in the world, Colin Robinson. I especially recommend the episode in which he becomes a manager in his company and goes beyond draining his energy – it’s amazing. The cast is really great, and the formula is interesting because it is another mockumentary hybrid: the film crew shoots day after day, and subsequent characters comment on the events directly to the camera. The series is an extension of the film of the same title, which he shot in New Zealand at the beginning of his career. Here he is one of the producers and sometimes guest stars in some episodes.

Let’s experience it again with option number 6: It is worth knowing that the cult “” is waiting for viewers on the platform. We have all seasons and full-length films at our disposal: after all these years, you can be surprised how the creators played with various conventions and definitely did not always do everything seriously. I warn you that it gets weird around the seventh season, because David Duchovny disappears and the creators sewed as best they could. There’s less and less Gillian Anderson there, so it’s actually turning into a spin-off of the original at the very end. Still, it’s honest entertainment.

The time machine, or the seventh choice: My inner child crowed with delight when I discovered that Disney’s resources included “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. In fact, watching this series is like taking a trip back in time. What I mean here is the set design and editing of the series, the plots which are very incorrect from today’s point of view, as well as the costumes and hairstyles of all the characters, deeply rooted in the trends of the late 1990s and the beginning of the 21st century. I wonder how Sarah Michelle Geller endured the constant running and kicking in high-heeled shoes (the creators of “The X-Files” also made fun of this motif in the episode about the Hollywood film based on Mulder and Scully’s investigation: the actress playing Dana asks the agent to show her how to run in heels), while I enjoy watching her beat the crap out of guys in stupid rubber vampire masks. By the way, it is worth knowing that in the fourth season he appears as a vampire named Edward (yes, long before “Twilight” and Robert Pattinson). At that time, he was still performing under the name Balmaceda, and years later he admitted that the small role literally saved him from homelessness, because he only had seven dollars in his account.

There is also “Angel” on Disney Plus, which in Polish was broadcast on TV probably as “Angel of Darkness”. It’s a story about how a vampire converted from an evil path no longer wants to murder people, but rather protects them from evil demons. Of course, it’s a spin off of “Buffy” starring David Boreanaz, what more could you want?

Crime movies and series on Disney Plus

Dark option, choice eight: If you want more of David Boreanaz, on Disney Plus you will also find all seasons of the crime series “Bones” with this actor in the main role. He plays the role of an FBI agent who, with the help of a brilliant anthropologist Dr. Temprance Brennan (played by Emily Dechanel) and a team of outstanding specialists from the Jeffersonian Institute, solves even the most difficult murder cases for 12 seasons. I freely admit that the last series still hurts me and I don’t like how the production was resolved, but I like to refresh the rest from time to time.

Suggestion no. 9 for fans of the classics: I was pleased to note that there are film adaptations of Agatha Christie’s novels by Kenneth Branagh on Disney Plus. His films about the detective Hercule Poirot have the advantage of always being very tastefully cast with Hollywood stars and having extremely nicely arranged sets and period costumes. Not all of them are of equal quality, “Ghosts in Venice” is, in my opinion, the weakest of the series, but it was still pleasant to watch, because there are not many classic crime stories like this anymore. There are, of course, many more surprising items on the platform, but this is a topic for a separate review. However, I am attaching a list of the most interesting items from various genres.
