Before signing with Real Madrid, Rodrygo was close to signing with Liverpool. In an interview with the British newspaper The Guardianthe Brazilian explained why he rejected the three million euro (around R$16 million) proposal from the English, in 2017, to stay at Santos.
“We didn’t close the deal because I didn’t want to. I wanted to stay at Santos even though I knew the offer was very good. The path they promised me would also have been very good for my career. I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for football European,” he said.
“It was always my dream to play in Europe. Everything was very good, but my desire spoke louder. I wanted to stay at Santos and make a bit of history at the club. And that’s what happened: I managed to fulfill my dream of playing for Santos. But It’s true, I almost went to Liverpool,” he added.
Rodrygo signed with Real Madrid in 2018, however, he only joined the Spanish side in June 2019, six months after turning 18 years old. To count on the boy, the Merengues needed to pay 45 million euros (R$ 193 million at the time).

During the interview, Rodrygo also commented on the match against Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, scheduled for this Tuesday, at 4pm (Brasília time). He revealed that he would have preferred to avoid his opponent at this stage of the competition.
“This was an opponent that, to be honest, we didn’t want to face. And they also think the same: they didn’t want to play against us. It’s a game that everyone expects to be the final, but it will be now. Manchester City are very good , but our team is also very strong. It will be good to meet them again”, he said
