Environmentalists: water quality in the Seine does not meet standards for athletes at the Games
The environmental organization Surfrider Foundation has identified a threat to athletes at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. L’Equipe reports this.
As it became known from the words of the source, the quality of water in the Seine still does not meet the standards recommended for swimming. Tests were carried out from September 2023 to March 2024. Scientists have pointed out the risks for athletes who will take part in triathlon and open water swimming competitions.
In August 2023, the Open Water Swimming World Cup in Paris was cancelled. The tournament was refused due to water contamination in the Seine. These competitions were supposed to be tests before the Olympic Games.
Swimming in the Seine has been prohibited since 1923, due in part to high concentrations of E. coli and other bacteria. It was planned to clean the river by the beginning of the Olympics.
The Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
