Juan Ayuso (UAE) has won the Itzulia Basque Country and Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS) has won the sixth and final stage, which was held this Saturday with start and finish in the Guipuzcoan town of Eibar (137.8 km).

After escaping from the ascent to Urkaregi heightWith 16 minutes left, Rodríguez raised his arms as the winner of the stage, followed by Ayuso, who did not compete in the sprint. The immediate pursuers, Marc Soler (UAE) and Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) have reached 41 seconds, so the Danish runner has lost the leader’s jersey on the last day.

This year’s Itzulia 2024 will be remembered for the serious fall on Thursday, which meant the abandonment, with injuries of varying degrees, of Jonas Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel, among others. They were joined on Friday Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step), in a plague of casualties that left the event orphaned of stars.

The casualties left the Basque round without stars, but, with the general classification very tight – the first ten almost in 20 seconds -, the last day was worth it with the exhibition of the present and future of Spanish cycling in a tough final stage. Was many attacks and attempts to crown the general classification of Itzulia, but only the last one, 16 kilometers from the finish line, succeeded.

Ayuso and Rodríguez understood each other perfectly and left behind the leader, a Skjelmose who did not give up, giving even more level to the finishing touch of the Basque round. Ayuso benefited from the work of his teammate to usually doto finish with the biggest victory of his young career.

Meanwhile, Rodríguez, who placed second overall, took the stage victory, gaining 41 seconds on Skjelmose at the end. The Dane was left without a general due to the work of the UAE, closing the podium of an Itzulia that had a great ending.
