Wiener called for a council to decide on the non-participation of Russians in the 2024 Olympics
The head of the All-Russian Federation of Rhythmic Gymnastics, Irina Viner, called for a council to be held to decide on the non-participation of Russian athletes in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Wiener said that by participating in the Games, athletes are trampling on Russian history and the present. “Sport is a war, only with a peaceful outcome, there is a life-or-death competition, people come out broken. And now what to fight for, where, why, why? The fish rots from the head, but they clean it from the tail,” she said.
On April 5, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia would rejoice at the victories of athletes, including tennis players, who would compete in a neutral status. He recalled that Russian athletes must make their own decisions about traveling to the Games.
In December 2023, the International Olympic Committee admitted Russians and Belarusians to the Olympics in Paris as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
