Swimmer Ivan Girev asked World Aquatics to revoke his neutral status
Russian swimmer Ivan Girev asked the International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics) to revoke his neutral status. The organization reported this to RIA Novosti.
“After speaking with the Independent Aquatics Integrity Office, we can confirm that Mr. Girev has requested that his status as a Neutral Independent Athlete be revoked,” the statement said.
23-year-old Girev received neutral status in the fall of 2023. The athlete is a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics in the relay. He also has two golds and a bronze at the European Championships and three silvers at the World Championships.
On September 4, 2023, the World Aquatics bureau allowed Russian athletes to participate in tournaments in a neutral status. Athletes will only be able to take part in events where the time or result is determined by the performance of one swimmer. A maximum of one athlete from Russia per discipline will be allowed to compete.
