The Ministry of Sports called football the most popular sport in Russia
The Russian Ministry of Sports has compiled a ranking of the most popular sports in the country. The list was named Sports.ru.
Football takes first place; according to official statistics, more than 3.4 million people played it in 2023. Swimming is in second place with 2.7 million participants. Volleyball closed the top three (2.5 million).
Figure skating has lost the most percentage of all athletes. In 2023, 375 thousand people stopped practicing it; now the number of representatives of this sport is 247 thousand.
At the end of February 2022, many sports organizations banned Russians from participating in competitions on the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee. Russia also lost the right to host many major tournaments.
