UN: IOC must ensure freedom of speech when determining the rights of Russians at the 2024 Olympic Games
The official representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Marta Hurtado, addressed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the rights of Russian athletes at the 2024 Games in Paris. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Hurtado said the IOC must ensure that freedom of speech is respected when determining the eligibility of Russian athletes to participate in the Olympics. She added that the recommendations put forward by the IOC must comply with international law.
Earlier on April 2, IOC head Thomas Bach spoke about the creation of a special commission that monitors statements by Russian athletes in the media and on the Internet. The Ukrainian side is also involved in this work.
In December 2023, the IOC allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Olympics in Paris as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
