European tour: ex-Flamengo man shines, but does not prevent Benfica from winning; Sporting remains leader of the Portuguese

This Friday, Benfica hosted Chaves at Estádio da Luz, in a game valid for the 27th round of the Portuguese Championship. Hugo Souza, former Flamengo goalkeeper, even saved three penalties, but was unable to prevent the visitors from losing 1-0. The only goal of the match was scored by João Neves.

With the result, the Lisbon team reached 67 points, but remained in second place. Chaves occupies the last place and only has 19 points.

Now, Benfica returns to the field next Tuesday, for the first leg of the Portuguese Cup semi-final, against Sporting. Chaves, in turn, will only have a commitment on another Sunday, April 7th, against Portimonense, in the Portuguese Championship.

The game
Benfica’s first big chance came in the 26th minute of the first half. With the help of VAR, the referee signaled a penalty after Alexander Bah suffered an elbow from Júnior Pius. On the charge, Di Maria hit weakly and Hugo Souza fit the ball.

In the 14th minute of the second half, Júnior Pius committed another penalty, this time bringing down Di Maria inside the area. Brazilian Arthur Cabral went to the penalty spot and saw Hugo save another penalty.

Despite this, the judge ordered the charge to be returned due to an invasion in the Carraça area. Arthur Cabral hit again, but missed for the second time, seeing the former Flamengo man save the third penalty in the match.

The wasted penalties, however, did not shake the Lisbon team, who opened the scoring a few minutes later, at 22. Di Maria took a free kick and João Neves slightly headed it into the back of the net. The ball even hit the post before entering, giving Hugo Souza no chance of defending.
