Fetisov: athletes who will go to the 2024 Olympics will continue to live in our society
Two-time Olympic champion and State Duma deputy Vyacheslav Fetisov warned Russian athletes who want to go to the 2024 Games in Paris. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
“They must understand: with this decision, they can somehow continue to live in our society,” Fetisov said. At the same time, he emphasized that the decision of the Russians who will go to perform at the Games in Paris must be respected, since they may not have another chance.
On March 26, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that any domestic athlete who condemned a special military operation (SVO) for the sake of the Olympics “would become a fiend.” He emphasized that the IOC removed this condition from the requirements, which means that Russians can go to the Games.
In December 2023, the International Olympic Committee decided to admit Russians and Belarusians to the Games in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, or who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to participate in the 2024 Games. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
