On Tuesday afternoon, England drew 2-2 with Belgium in an international friendly. Tielemans (2x) scored for the Belgians, while Toney and Bellingham scored for the English. The match was played at Wembley Stadium.
With the result, Gareth Southgate’s England ends this FIFA date with a balance of a draw and a defeat – they lost to Brazilian Team 1-0 in the first clash. In turn, Belgium ends with two draws, as in the first friendly they drew goalless with Ireland.
Now, both teams will have a few more months to prepare for the Euro Cup, which will be played in June this year. England is in Group C, with Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia. Belgium is in bracket E, with Slovakia and Romania.
The game
Ten minutes into the game, Belgium opened the scoring. Pickford played the wrong way and Onana had the ball in midfield. The midfielder played to Tielemans, who saw the goalkeeper poorly positioned and took a risk from outside the area. The Belgian shot low, into the right corner, and scored.
Five minutes later, however, England were awarded a penalty, which was later confirmed by VAR. Bellingham passed it to Toney inside the area and the number 17 was brought down by Vertonghen. In the charge, the attacker didn’t waste anything and left everything the same.
With 19 minutes, Belgium arrived in danger again. Doku made a great move on the left side and invaded the penalty area. The Manchester City striker cut to the middle and finished, but stopped in defense of Pickford.
And England even managed the comeback, but had their goal disallowed. After a corner kick at the second post, Lewis Dunk headed into the middle of the area and Bowen headed the ball into the back of the net. However, after a VAR check, it was found that the number 18 was offside.
And so, it was the Belgians who reached the second goal first. After the throw, Lewis Dunk made a mistake when trying to take it away and Lukaku kept the ball. The striker entered the area and crossed with three fingers to Tielemans, who arrived with a minnow to score the winning goal: 2-1.
In the second half, the game cooled down and there were fewer chances created. England, however, tried a final pressure and managed to draw with Bellingham. The midfielder received the ball from James Maddison inside the box and finished low to close the score at 2-2.
Maddison hooks the ball back to @BellinghamJude who finishes well – with virtually the last kick of the game – to equalise! 💫 https://t.co/9TmNHifym1
