Mathieu van der Poel wins the E3 Saxo Classic alone and with an exhibition
The Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) won this Friday alone in the E3 Saxo Classicone day test UCI World Tour disputed over 207.6 kilometers with start and finish in the Belgian town of Harelbeke.
Van der Poel launched a powerful attack that no one was able to respond a little less than 44 kilometers from the finish line, in the passage through the Paterberg and on cobblestone roads, until reaching the finish line victoriously with 1:31 minute lead about the belgian Jasper Stuyven (Lidl-Trek).
TO 1:34 another Belgian finished, Wout Van Aert (Visma), winner of the last two editions of the event and who recovered from a fall while trying to respond to the Dutchman’s attack to get on the podium.
A week after contributing to his teammate Jasper Philipsen’s victory in Milan-San Remo, the champion of the world signed his first victory in the E3 Saxo Classic, which this year celebrated its sixty-sixth edition.
Mathieu van der Poel achieved his forty-seventh victory as a professional.
