RFU Secretary General Mitrofanov explained the refusal to move to Asia due to the wealth of UEFA
General Secretary of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Maxim Mitrofanov explained the country’s refusal to transfer to the Asian Football Confederation. His words are quoted by “Championship”.
Mitrofanov said that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is the richest confederation in the world, with the amount of Champions League revenue distributed between clubs amounting to 4.4 billion euros. He emphasized that UEFA annually invests in the RFU an amount three times greater than that received by the winner of the Asian Champions League.
In December 2023, all members of the RFU executive committee considered it pointless to move to Asia without guarantees from the International Football Federation (FIFA). It was decided that the organization will continue to contact UEFA upon the return of Russians to tournaments.
On February 28, 2022, FIFA and UEFA excluded Russian national teams and clubs from international tournaments. Teams do not compete in European competitions, and the Russian national team lost the opportunity to compete for access to the final part of the 2022 World Cup and did not participate in the Euro 2024 qualifications.
