Denis Lebedev called boxers’ victories at the Olympics without Russians inferior
Former world boxing champion Denis Lebedev appreciated the victories of athletes at major tournaments in which Russians do not take part. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
He called such results inferior. “We have a huge country, we have many talented athletes. Without the presence of our country at competitions, any world champion will be of poor quality, an Olympic champion will be inferior,” the Russian said.
Previously, Russian boxers refused to qualify for the Olympic Games. Domestic athletes will not perform at the qualifying tournaments due to the need to obtain neutral status. Representatives of artistic and rhythmic gymnastics also expressed a similar position.
On March 19, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that a maximum of 55 Russians would have a chance to compete at the 2024 Games in Paris. They will take part in the competition in a neutral status.
